Medicine absorbed in the mouth—the latest in advanced cancer pain

The FDA approved a new pain treatment—a very potent one called Abstral. The active ingredient is fentanyl, a very strong medicine which is absorbed sooner than conventional pills and actually gets into the body through the gums, tongue and cheeks of the mouth.

The approval is for people who already use medicines in the opioid family around the clock and need to get relief for pain that breaks through the medicine they are already using. This approval is clearly something for cancer pain patients to smile about!
