FDA approves generic Plavix (clopidogrel) in a major after heart attack decision

As predicted in The Essential Guide to Prescription Drugs, 12 Top Meds for 2012, the FDA today approved the first generic form of Plavix (clopidogrel).

Long a blockbuster drug, Plavix has saved the lives of countless patients, including this editor. The way for the drug has become clouded with emerging information about genetic variation in activation, possible approval of the generic and competition from a newer medicine called prasugrel (Effient).
