Amturnide (am TUR nyde)

and three drugs in one for high blood pressure

We may need to learn to say Amturnide (am TUR nyde) since it is a triple combination of medicines in a single pill.

Amturnide combines a water pill (diuretic called hydrochlorothiazide), a calcium channel blocker (amlodipine or Norvasc) AND a direct renin inhibitor (aliskiren or Tekturna) in the same pill. Approval for this innovative combination was made after results of a study of 1,181 people with moderate to severe high blood pressure.

The study showed that the triple combination lowered blood pressure more than aliskiren and amlodipine, aliskiren and hydrochlorothiazide or amlodipine and hydrochlorothiazide.  Amturnide is approved to treat high blood pressure that is not adequately controlled with prior combination of any two of: aliskiren, thiazide diuretic or a dihydropyridine calcium channel blocker.

Treating high blood pressure to the goal set by your doctor and keeping it there is the best way to use high blood pressure medicines and decrease risk of high blood pressure (HBP) complications. Serious risks brought on by  HBP include heart attack, stroke, kidney failure and blindness.
