Dr. James J. Rybacki
A scheduled lethal injection of a Georgia inmate was postponed because the medicine (pentobarbital-Nembutal) to be used in the procedure appeared cloudy and therefore defective. This is a medicine in the barbiturate family of medicines usually used as a second line medicine in seizures. The package insert for Nembutal clearly states that itravenous solutions that appear cloudy should NEVER be used.
A pharmacist was apparently called in to examine the product and did the correct thing. There may not have been an acceptable replacement dose on hand. While this editor dosn't know the required state rules are in such a situation (Nembbutal is the ONLY acceptable drug for lethal injection in georgia). The execution was rescheduled.
I will be covering pentobarbital (Nembutal) in the upcoming 25th edition of The Essential Guiide to Prescription Drugs.
